Tigers 18U: McDaniel College Q&A

21 Oct 2021 by Christian Malinowski

WHERE ARE THE FIELDS?
Green Terror Softball Park
Stadium Drive
Westminster, Maryland 21157

(Note that the softball field is next to Kenneth R. Gill Stadium. Stadium Drive wraps completely around the stadium, and if I put “Stadium Drive” into Google Maps, it looks like it takes you to the EAST side. The field is on the WEST side of the stadium.)

There is plenty of parking as you come around the stadium road. Please don’t park in the grass behind our RF fence, but you can park on the grass around the stadium road as long as it’s dry. There are also parking lots close to the field on that stadium road that you can use.

WHO IS COMING TO THIS ONE?
Clara Babyak
Madyson Babyak
Lilly Barra
Paige Bergan (PLUS FRIDAY TOUR)
Brenna Beshock (PLUS FRIDAY TOUR)
Bailley Dorson
Emily Fisher
Eliza Lane
Helena Polinsky (PLUS FRIDAY TOUR)

HOW FAR AWAY IS MCDANIEL FROM HOME?
Fairfield (Kira) = 26 miles (35 minutes)
Dillsburg (Eliza) = 45 miles (1 hour)
Pine Grove (Bailley, Lilly) = 99 miles (1 hour, 55 minutes)
Tremont (Emily) = 105 miles (2 hours)
Blandon (Me, Joe) = 101 miles (2 hours, 5 minutes)
Schuylkill Haven (Paige) = 109 miles (2 hours, 10 minutes)
Orwigsburg (Helena) = 125 miles (2 hours, 25 minutes)
Summit Hill (Brenna) = 144 miles (2 hours, 50 minutes)
Tafton (Madyson) = 214 miles (3 hours, 45 minutes)

WHAT ARE THE DETAILS ON THE FRI 10/22 TOUR?
The tour is at 2pm. That gives everyone plenty of time to get there. After the campus tour Tigers 18U graduate and starting shortstop for McDaniel College, Makayla Calamita, will meet up with us to show everyone the McDaniel softball team locker room, field, etc.
The tour starts from the Admissions office which is at the corner of 3rth St and Main St.
Obviously you’ll want to give yourself a little bit of extra time and not be late.

MCDANIEL SPORTS TEAMS TERROR NIGHT
Per Makayla Calamita, the McDaniel sports teams are hosting a “Trick-or-Terror” Night on Friday night, 10/22, from 6:30-8:30pm if any of the girls who will be there Friday night would want to come get some candy and meet people.

WHAT TEAMS ARE IN THIS TOURNAMENT?
There are (4) teams:
> Tigers!
> Hurricanes Fastpitch
> Maryland Fever
> St.Mary’s Thunder

WHEN DO WE PLAY SATURDAY?
12:00pm vs. Hurricane Fastpitch
1:30pm vs. Maryland Fever
4:30pm vs. St.Mary’s Thunder

So that’s sit, sit, play, play, sit, play.

The 1st two games we’re in the 3rd base dugout, and the 4:30pm game we’re in the 1st base dugout.

WHAT TIME SHOULD WE ARRIVE?
Since our first game is at noon, please arrive by 11am.

WHERE DO WE WARM UP BEFORE THE GAMES?
Before Game 1 when we’re on the 3B side, there is a hitting tunnel for hitting and a bullpen area for the pitchers/catchers to warm up.

Before Game 3 when we’re on the 1B side, there is an open field localed past the RF field where we can hit, and a bullpen area for the pitcher/catcher.

We are welcome to use the field for hitting fly balls and back of the infield for fielding warm-ups just as we do at any other tournament.

WHAT RULES ARE THEY USING?
> USSSA rules
> 80 minutes, finish the batter
> Showcase roster format: Everyone can bat, unlimited defensive subs
> With 2 outs, teams MUST run for your catcher
> Courtesy runners will be last completed at-bat or any subs on bench

WILL THERE BE AN ANNOUNCER?
Funny you should ask, because yes there will! Player’s names will be announced before each at-bat.

WHAT ABOUT A SCOREBOARD?
McDaniel is in the process of installing a new scoreboard twice as big as the existing one, planned for November installation. The old scoreboard is still in place, but has been temperamental lately, so please have patience if it doesn’t cooperate.

ARE THERE ANY COVID RESTRICTIONS?
If you go into any of the campus buildings, you must wear a mask. The stadium has restrooms that are considered “outside” and are accessed in the stadium concourse. As long as we stay outside, McDaniel College & Carroll County Health Department have no restrictions on wearing mask outdoors.

WILL THERE BE CONCESSIONS?
Yes there will be a little stand/tent in the RF area for your convenience.

WHERE ARE THE RESTROOMS?
The restrooms are located in our football stadium concourse located behind our backstop.

HOW DOES THE WEATHER LOOK?
Friday – Comfortable. Mix of sun and clouds, getting increasingly more cloudy as the day goes on, but no chance of rain. 66 degrees at 2pm, then slowly cooling from there.

Saturday – Similar to Friday but a bit cooler. Mix of sun and clouds. 5% chance of rain. 58 degrees at 11am, going up to a high of 62 degrees mid-afternoon.

WHICH UNIFORMS ARE WE WEARING?
White/Red/Black with black pants, red socks.

I’d bring a sweatshirt to wear between games. Parents will probably want to dress warm. If you want to wear an long sleeve shirt under your shirt, the preference is black, but if you don’t have a black long sleeve t-shirt, no biggie.
