The Blandon Lions Club has put themselves into our 2022 Line-Up! The Blandon Lions Club Meets regularly at the Maidencreek Church, 261 Main St., Blandon, every 2nd and 4th Monday, at 6:30pm. I always got the feeling that many people don’t know what the Lions Club is. Well this is a great way to find out! Our Lions Club is part of Lions Club International, a non-profit fraternal organization with 45,000 clubs and more than 1.3 million members worldwide. Their goal is to be the global leader in community and humanitarian service.
"Our motto is 'We serve,' so that's what we do," said Paul Schmehl, Blandon Lions Club president. The Blandon Lions Club raises money for a number of community organizations, including the Blandon Fire Company and Blandon Ambulance Association. "We try to keep our money in the community. We try to donate within the community," Schmehl said. One of the group's biggest contributions is its stewardship of Maier's Grove. The Lions have owned and operated the popular picnic grove for several years. "We maintain it, and we rent it out almost every weekend over the summer," Schmehl. "A lot of groups come out for things like family reunions, parties, picnics and even vacation Bible school. We keep it nice. It gives the community a place to gather." Another place the community gathers is at the Lions Club's annual Halloween Frolic. "We have the children of the community come out in costume and parade around the baseball field at Blandon Fire Company," Schmehl said. "I think the kids enjoy it, and we usually get a big crowd at it. Basically, that's what it's all about - trying to get the community together."
Lions have a dynamic history. Founded in 1917, we are best known for fighting blindness, but we also volunteer for many different kinds of community projects - including caring for the environment, feeding the hungry and aiding seniors and the disabled.
Lions give sight. By conducting vision screenings, equipping hospitals and clinics, distributing medicine and raising awareness of eye disease, Lions work toward their mission of providing vision for all.
